Hero Bio:

Augustino Gatti was born in Ruchetta, Italy, in September, 1889. He came to the United States in 1911, and made his home with his uncle, P. Gatti, on the latter’s ranch near Reno, Nevada. From the time of his arrival until he was called into the Service of our Country, he followed the occupation of ranch hand for his uncle. On November 3d, 1917, he entrained from Reno with a Washoe County contingent for Camp Lewis, Washington. Arriving there, he was assigned to the 37th Company, 10th Battalion, 166th Depot Brigade. From that time on his Service Record is rather hazy as to his later assignments. All that is known is that he went overseas on December 15, 1917, very probably with some regiment of the 41st Division. From that division he was transferred eventually to Company H, 16th Infantry, of the 1st Division.

The date of his transfer to the 16th Infantry is not known. Nor does it appear whether or not he was with the First Division when it stormed the observation stations at Cantigny on May 28th, but he must have joined the division at the time or shortly after. At any rate he served with the 1st in its famous drive between Soissons and Chateau Thierry when it captured Berzy-le-Sec (July 18-22), for he was severely wounded in battle on the 18th of July. He died of pneumonia and spinal meningitis on November 10th, 1918, somewhere in France, just one day before the end of the great struggle. He had indeed done his bit as a brave American Soldier. His parents, Giovanni and Mary Gatti, living in Ruchetta, Italy, survive him. His uncle, P. Gatti, lives at 1007 Washington Street, Reno, Nevada.
